"The Artamonov business", Maxim Gorky

Максим Горький

Today we finally read the work of Maxim Gorky "The Artamonov business".

One, who read the work, could say: "Started with laughter, finished with tears". Yeah, the proverb is quite suitable here. I, personally, wouldn't even think of such a non-holliwood end of the story.

The reader faces with three generations of Artamonov family. The novel starts with event, when the family, father and 3 sons, comes to Dryomov-town, which is located on Vataraksha river. Gorky opposes diligent and enterprising Ilya Artamonov, father, to drinking and sluggish townsfolk. Actually, Ilya was so pushy, and stubborn, pursuing his aim, that townspeople confided in him and he started building a weaving mill. He was so absorbed in his business, that he died when he was trying to mount a boiler with his workers. After his death the business has been gradually descending till the end of the novel.
